This nineteenth century log cabin was built in the 1850’s by Ben Turner on a site located on New Liberty Road across from Overton Lake in Calhoun County.   According to records found at the Calhoun County Courthouse, Ben Turner and a brother, along with their families, moved into the area from Georgia. He was the owner of two slaves, one male and one female. The cabin is a story and a half hand-hewn pine structure that measures 18×16 and had several timber framed rooms adjoining it.

Occupants over the years also included my paternal great-great uncle, George Washington Couch “Uncle Wash” and my aunt, Bessie.  They lived in the cabin during the 1920’s through the 1940’s. They raised five children here (Charlsie, Lolarene, William Carolton, Frank, and Aaron “Buster”).  In the 1950’s my maternal great-grandfather, Wylie Homesley and grandmother, Adelia lived in the cabin.  Later, Wylie’s son, Harry and his wife, Velma Homesley resided here. It sat empty for years until we moved it to this location, one log at at time, and began the process of rebuilding it to its original state in the fall of 2010.  Our desire is to use this as a fully functioning guest house. Hopefully, many more generations of family will get to enjoy this great old cabin!
